There are many first questions we might want to ask of this text. In the ten years since it has been written have we observed more rhetorical or political interpretation? Is the rhetorical-political turn warranted? Is feminism the best place to locate this turn? In response to Childs and as a bit of a segue, one thing we might want to reflect on is the way in which both Biblical Theology as Childs considers it, and Ethics of Biblical Interpretation as Schussler Fiorenza consider it, succeed as second order discourses on the Bible. These are the two substantial discourses about how we interpret the bible operative in the academy in recent memory (more on this later). How are we helped in approaching the biblical text when we approach it in this way?
Posted by Trevor at October 30, 2003 10:07 AMWell, Trevor, I'll answer. I haven't seen Schüssler Fiorenza's presidential address deflect the trends in biblical interpreation a whole lot. There's a large body of interpreters with a lot of momentum who're just going to keep on going in the way they were taught, without much reflection.
Part of the importance of both Childs and Schüssler Fiorenza derives from their efforts to raise the ethics question while standing in front of the interpretive locomotive. Ought Christian faith make a difference in our interpretations of biblical texts? Ought the effect of an interpretation on women — who were at the beginning more prominent in the Christian movement than they became within a few decades — affect the status of the interpretation? And if these ought to inflect our interpretations, what should the shape of that influence be? How do we discern that?
